What to expect, and how to reach us

Langcap turns content you already have — video, audio, ebooks, articles — into short questions stitched back to the moment they came from, and runs entirely on your own machine. Here's what to expect from the founder beta, how to set it up, and how to get help.

Windows only, for now

The founder beta is a Windows app (Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit). It installs per-user — no admin rights needed. macOS comes later; Linux isn't planned.

Languages

Seven languages have the full experience today — English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Chinese — so you can study from pasted text or from audio and video. Japanese and Korean work from audio and video only: clips are transcribed and aligned on your machine, but the type-to-hear text on-ramp for those two is waiting on a voice still in training. The app's own interface is in English. If the language you came for isn't ready when the beta ships, you're refunded — see below.

It uses your GPU

Langcap runs its speech models on your graphics card, so it wants a Vulkan-capable GPU with an up-to-date driver (most GPUs from the last several years qualify). Without one it still runs, just slowly — transcription falls back to the CPU — and the app tells you on launch rather than misbehaving. The speech models download once from our file host — the shared ones when the app first sets itself up, and each language's pieces the first time you study it — then run locally and offline.

Your files stay on your machine

Langcap reads and processes your content on-device. It has no account and no sign-in, and it doesn't upload your files, your study data, or usage analytics — there's no server-side copy to look up. The only times it touches the network are downloading those language models the first time you need them, and a best-effort license check on launch. That's also why a support reply asks you for details directly: there are no logs on our end.

Installing

Your purchase email has a download link. Save Langcap-Setup-0.1.0.exe and double-click it — it installs for your user only, so there's no admin prompt, and it opens on its own when it finishes. Because the app is newly signed, Windows SmartScreen may first say "Windows protected your PC"; click More info, then Run anyway. That prompt fades as more people install this signed build.

Activating your license

Your license key arrives by email right after checkout. Open Langcap, go to Settings, and paste the key into Enter license key. Activation happens on your machine — the key is a signed token Langcap verifies locally, with no server call — so it works offline and stays active across restarts. The key doesn't expire.

The first-run download

When you first open Langcap it sets itself up: the shared speech models — speech-to-text, plus the grammar and meaning models that shape the questions (about 3 GB together) — download once from our file host, so first launch does some fetching in the background. After that, each language's own pieces — its voice, timing, and dictionary — download the first time you study that language. You'll see each download happen; once a piece is cached it runs locally, and the app works offline. The network is needed only for these first-time downloads.

Using Langcap offline

Once your language's models are downloaded and your license is activated, Langcap runs with no connection — importing, mining, studying, and playback all happen on your machine. When it can reach the network it does a quick, best-effort license check on launch, but being offline never locks you out: your license is perpetual and keeps working.

Updates

Langcap checks for a new version shortly after it starts. If one is out and you're within your year of included updates, it downloads quietly and installs the next time you quit — nothing to click. If your update year has passed, it lets you know a newer version exists and offers to renew ($39/year) rather than updating on its own; either way, the version you have keeps working.

Uninstalling

Remove Langcap like any Windows app: Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Langcap > Uninstall (or search "Add or remove programs" from the Start menu). It's a per-user install, so there's no admin prompt. Uninstalling removes the app but keeps your library, progress, settings, and downloaded models, so a reinstall picks up where you left off. To erase everything, also delete the data folder: paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\langcap into the File Explorer address bar and delete the folder it opens.

What you pay

The founder beta is a one-time purchase of $59. You own it — no subscription. The first year of updates is included; after that, updates are an optional $39/year, and the app keeps working whether or not you renew. Your license activates offline by pasting a key into Settings; it doesn't expire.

Refunds

A founding pre-order ($59) is fully refundable until launch, and refunded if your language isn't ready when the beta ships. For a founder-beta purchase, you can request a refund within 30 days by emailing support. Refunds and payments are handled by Paddle, our merchant of record.

Reaching us

Email [email protected]. Because everything runs on your machine, we have no server-side logs — so a few details get you a much faster fix. When you write, please include what applies:

• Your Langcap version (in Settings, on the About line).
• Your Windows version (press the Windows key, type winver).
• The installer file you ran (its name, e.g. Langcap-Setup-0.1.0.exe).
• If something about media or audio/video setup failed: your GPU model and graphics-driver version.
• What you imported — pasted text, a text file, subtitles, audio, or video — and the language.
• A screenshot, or the exact error text copied out (not paraphrased) — Langcap shows real error text, so the literal string usually names the cause.
